Rabies Status in Kavrepalanchok District

Rabies Status in Kavrepalanchok District

This study examines the epidemiological trends, surveillance systems, and community perceptions of rabies in Kavrepalanchok District, Nepal. Using a mixed-methods approach that combined retrospective data analysis (2018–2025), field surveys, stakeholder consultations, and diagnostic reviews, the research provides district-level evidence to support rabies elimination efforts
Findings identify Banepa and Dhulikhel as recurring hotspots, with clear seasonal peaks during the monsoon months (June–September). A significant rise in testing and confirmed cases in fiscal year 2023/24 reflects improved surveillance, but the emergence of human fatalities in 2024 and 2025 signals an urgent public health concern. While community awareness of rabies severity is high, knowledge gaps remain regarding incubation periods, exposure risks, and vaccine protocols.
The study underscores the need for strengthened municipal surveillance, improved laboratory confirmation, targeted seasonal interventions, and expanded public education under a One Health framework. The findings aim to guide policy, budget allocation, and coordinated action toward achieving zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies.
